Dear Muslim Association,As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU I intend to protest your protest.I am offended not by cartoons, but by more mundane things like beheadings of civilians, cowardly attacks on public buildings, suicide murders, murders of Catholic priests (the latest in Turkey), burnings of Christian churches, the continued persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt, the imposition of Sharia law on non-Muslims, the rapes of Scandinavian girls and women (called 'whores' in your culture), the murder of film directors in Holland, and the rioting and looting in Paris France.This is what offends me, a soft-spoken person and academic, and many, many of my colleagues..I counsel you dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Muslims to be very aware of this as you proceed with your infantile 'protests.'If you do not like the values of the West - see the 1st Amendment - you are free to leave. I hope for God's sake that most of you choose that option.Please return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans.

Wow! Prof. Wichman is astonishingly stupid! He may know tons about engineering but he knows JACK SQUAT about Islam...except that which he hears from talk radio I assume. His crazy comments bring to mind one of my favorite quotes from Pope John Paul II: "Know what you are talking about." Sadly, Prof. Wichman has absolutely zero clue what he is talking about.
First off, the overwhelming percentage of Islamic nations DO NOT behead people, nor do they burn Christians. That's one of those "evil liberal media" conspiracies...after all, it's all they show on out tube so I guess I can see where Wichman drew his conclusions. And this moron has ZERO understanding of what Sharia law actually is. He's completely jumped off the boat and missed the ocean. Oh, and most Islamic nations have equal rights for women. In fact, many have women leaders. It's obvious that Mr. Wichman has never ever even made the attempt to learn about Islam. In addition, he should take a look in the mirror. My assumption is that he is a "good" Christian. Well, perhaps he should notice that huge Christian mote in his eye (Crusades, Inquisition, the BEGINNINGS of slave trades, etc.) before he goes around pointing out the beam in his brother's eye. Hypocrite!

Brad, I think you missed his point. He wasn't talking about Islam but Muslim actions. Their law was written by a man of conquest. Some interpret the law in a peaceful way, some interpret it in a violent way. He was talking to those of violent protest.
You do know how I value and welcome your comments and point of view, however you do need to watch that language of yours. My wife read your comment and was disappointed in your choice of exclamatory verbiage.
Oh I think Prof. Wickman revealed enough ignorance in his comments to last quite a while...whether or not he's speaking of Islam, Muslim actions, etc. Their law being written "by a man of conquest" isn't exactly true either. Muhammad was illiterate for one, and most of the writings of the Qur'an cam after he was dead. And most of the conquest was done by the followers of Muhammad. Sure, Muhammad overthrew the leadership of Mecca, but he had very good reason.
Besides, many people interpret the Bible is a violent way as well. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the Bible has brought about more destruction than the Qur'an could ever hope to do. Maybe Wickman should chew on that.
I know it's popular to hate on Islam these days...sort of like it was popular to hate Communism in the 80s, Germans in the 40s, and Catholics during the founding era (yes, our founders said some terrible things about those "evil" Catholics during their time...just like Prof. Wichman is doing today with Islam).
Yes, Islam may be a popular religion to hate. After all, those Muslims are crazy enough to believe that their founding prophet was a confused youngster who didn't know how God (Allah) wanted him to worship, so after many months of intense pondering he prayed to God (Allah) and received an amazing vision in which God (Allah) along with Jesus and others told him to not follow any of the faiths because they were all wrong, but instead informed Muhammad that he would be "purifying" the faith to follow the one true God.
Gee, this all sounds so familiar!
Now, I am not saying that Muhammad was in any way J. Smith, but the comparison stands. Besides, almost every modern prophet has spoken very highly of Muhammad being "a man of God." Sadly, his followers distorted what he was really trying to teach them...almost like an apostasy thing.

I still think Wickman's comments would stand on any one of your comparisons. The conquistadores, the Catholic holy wars, and yes even the jihadists past and present. Yes, that is the problem when you don't have a living prophet indeed. Misinterpretation interpolation easily occurs. Even when you DO have a prophet, there are enough people to interpret the scriptures in ways that are ...well, wrong.
Speaking of Muhamed, I need your resource suggestions to find a good biography on him.
And speaking of founding fathers. There was one... the name of which escapes me at the moment, but had a copy of the Qur'an to find out why the Muslims were the barbaric pirates that they were.
Nope...not comparing Wichman to the founders...only his lame editorial to the lame anti-Catholicism of the founders.
Several founders read the Qur'an. Jefferson, Adams, Washington, Benjamin Rush, James Wilson, etc. What's interesting is that most of them thought very highly of Hinduism and Islam, but not of orthodox Christianity (most were unitarian in thought and believed that the organized religion of their day had distorted what Jesus taught...again, we've heard this somewhere before).
As for a bio on Muhammad, they can be a little hard to find, since most Muslims believe that speaking too loosely of Muhammad is blasphemy (sort of a "taking the name of God in vain, even though they don't think Muhammad is god...just a respect thing). With that said, here are a few:

"No God but God" by Reza Aslan. This is an EXCELLENT book on Islam in general.
